New Age Music - How It s Made

Different styles of music have different “sounds.” We can all pretty much agree on that point. For example, Jazz uses seventh chords almost exclusively. This, and the kind of chord progressions used in Jazz gives it its unique flavor. But what about new age music? Does it have it s own special ingredients?

Yes it does.

Now, there are no hard and fast rules here but for the most part, new age music is a consonant music. That is, there is little or noharshness going on in the music. No Saxes wailing and what not. Having said that we can eliminate most of the tense jazz chords and their voicing. So what are we left with? Mostly Major and minor chords based on the regular scales and the modes. The chord progressions are simpler and usually start on the l chord. No ll-V-l progressions here.

What about melody? In jazz, we have a soloist who usually plays a lot of chromatic notes. This is rare in new age music because it would create dissonance. New age melodies tend to be softer and more on the spiritual side. Solos, if there are any, are not so much concerned with the expression of the self than they are with letting the music express itself. A subtle but very important distinction. Jazz players may have some ego invested in their performance. New age musicians learn to let the music play them. They learn to become a channel for the music itself allowing it to speak through them. Of course, I m not saying that this can t happen in Jazz, but, just watch a Jazz performer and you ll see what I mean.

Last but not least is rhythm. Let s do a comparison/contrast between Jazz and New Age music. Jazz has a definite discernible rhythm. It is what makes Jazz Jazz. New age music can have a pattern or an underlying rhythm to the music. It can be used to create trance like states in the listener. Drums are usually a part of Jazz music. Percussion is mostly absent from the New Age sound simply because it would not add to the atmosphere most New Age musicians create. Timing is very important to the Jazz musician. The soloist has the freedom to play whatever he wants as long as he maintains the meter and stays in time. New Age music is more elastic in that timing is there, but is not a master of the player. The New Age player can disregard time altogether.

Just listen to Zen flute music as a good example of this. Now, what does all this mean for the aspiring New Age musician? A couple of good things. It means that there is a definite new age “sound” out there. That it is here to stay and that people like and need to hear it. And it means that there are some guidelines out there for what defines the meaning of New Age music.

The Songwriting Habits

Some songwriters just wait for inspiration, those are not likely to succeed. Inspiration comes as a result of work; to get inspired you have to work hard and practice. So, how can you practice songwriting?! The habit of sitting down to actually think about a subject, to look up words in rhyme dictionaries, to play the piano for just the right chord…etc. All this is just the habit of practicing.
As you practice more, HIT IDEAS will suddenly come to you out of the blue!! Writing hit songs is the inspiration that you worked hard to get. For example, you might spend a lot of nights wearing your brains out writing melodies (that is practicing, and organizing your songwriting thoughts), and then while shopping for shoes an amazing melody starts echoing in your head: That s your hit song.
This means that practicing doesn t get you hit songs or hit ideas, instead it trains your brain to function better musically and to become more aware of “songwriting potential” in things occurring in your environment. There are other habits, besides practicing, that are useful too. These habits are tools to help the songwriter collect the fruits of practicing. Here they are….
Habit One. Have a notebook with you at all times:
Any time a song idea hits you, a good verse, creative metaphor..etc. Write it down for review later.
Habit Two. Have a digital recorder with you at all times:
You can use any thing to record sound with…Your “hit” melodies will not be lost. (Sometimes I use the notebook to write the notes of the melody -like D B A G..etc.-, you can do that too and save yourself the trouble of having to sing in a supermarket ;).
Habit Three. Ask people what they think about your creations:
Showing them to friends is always a good idea. However, showing them to other songwriters means great advice and “professional” comments that would go beyond “Good work, where are we going to eat?” :).
Habit Four. Keep your hit ideas organized:
Now that you have kept every amazing melody and every interesting lyric that hit you on paper, It s time for you to put them together in a great song. But how are you going to keep track of every single melody, title, chord progression or lyric that you think of or write?!! The answer is to have them organized in a way that makes them easily searchable and accessible. You can still do your organizing the old way using paper put in folders besides the folder-sub folder organizing on your computer. There are softwares that might help, like “TrackNotes” from “Virtual Studio Systems”.
Habit Five. Practice:
I have talked about this a lot. It s really important…You will not be musically inspired unless your brain gets used to music. Inspiration is HARD WORK!! Practice by reading for successful lyricists, by listening carefully to great songs, by struggling for days with one line to get the right word for meaning and rhyme, by experimenting with chord progressions…etc. There are lots of stuff you can do…PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!!
Now that I have let you in on the songwriter habits, there remains a warning: Not every idea that you get is an inspirational moment, you will get a lot of “junk ideas”. Nevertheless, do not try to judge your ideas the same moment you get them; record every thing and keep track of every thing you think of. You can later review these ideas, save the good ones and throw away the bad ones (you can better keep them in a safe place too, every thing may come in handy!).
Finally, you don t have to go with all these habits. They are habits that I developed because they were comfortable to ME. You, also, can discover and develop your own useful habits. The only habit that is crucial is!?!! You guessed right: PRACTICING.

Moe, Larry And Curly

Moe, Larry and Curly, do the names ring a bell? If you ever watched Saturday morning television, you probably know who I am talking about. I owe these guys big time. If it wasn t for them, I never would have had such a good time when I went to those cheap movies in Brooklyn as a kid. They always featured 3 movies and 21 cartoons, including the Three Stooges, every Saturday. You can imagine how long we spent in the theatre on that day. We would be there for about six hours. But the highlight of the day was always those three zany guys. The theatre would show old movies so the price of admission was cheap There was usually one cowboy movie, one mystery movie and then a random type movie. Somehow they always managed to show movies that kids would like.
They weren t always The Three Stooges and there wasn t always the same three people. When they first broke into vaudeville, their act was called Ted Healy and his Stooges. Moe was Harry Moses Howard but he had formerly been named Horwitz. He started out with his brother Shemp, I m sure you all remember him, his name was Samuel Howard. As the act progressed another person joined. He was Larry Fine. Remember the guy with the bushy hair that Moe kept pulling out? Larry Fine was really Louis Feinberg. Shemp got his name because his mother had a thick accent and that was the best she could do while trying to pronounce Samuel.
The act didn t stay together this way for too long because Shemp decided he wanted to leave and pursue a career in the movies. Shemp was replaced by his brother Curly Howard. Sometimes you will see it spelled Curley. Curly s name was Jerome Howard. People called him Babe. The Stooges were not happy. They didn t like the way Ted Healy treated them. They got lucky and signed with Colombia Pictures and were paid the salary of a few hundred dollars per week. Little did they know at the time that they would be starring in the incredible amount of over 190 movies. No wonder there are so many Three Stooges movies on tv.
Things were going pretty well for them until 1945 when Curly suffered a stroke. Because of his stroke, Curly appears in only 97 of the movies. Most of these movies were shorts, but we used to look forward to seeing them more than the features. When a Three Stooges movie would come on, everyone would clap, it was something to see. Shemp returned and he appeared in a total of 73 movies. But Shemp didn t stay and in 1956 Joe Besser replaced him. I have nothing against Joe Besser, its just that I thought he wasn t funny. I felt he sort of lowered the fun factor of the films. Joe had to leave when his wife became ill and he was replaced by another unfunny guy named Joe DeRita, who tried to imitate the original Curly, without success.
In 1970 Larry Fine suffered a stroke while filming Kook s Tour which was never finished. He died in 1975. Emil Sitka was to replace Larry but then Moe died and that was the end of the Three Stooges as an act.
The Stooges were very popular and in 1959 the entire Stooge s library of films were syndicated by Columbia for television. Now a new generation of people would get to enjoy the antics of those three crazy guys. Many people have criticized the violence in the Three Stooges Movies, but it is so bizarre that even little children know it isn t real. It is sort of a form of cartoon violence but with real actors. Fifty nine percent of all Americans who are at least 30 years old can name the Three Stooges but hardly anyone can name all the Justices of the Supreme Court.
Interestingly, there are four of the Stooges movies in the public domain. They are:
Disorder in the Court (1936)
Malice in the Palace (1949)
Sing A Song of Six Pants (1947)
Brideless Groom (1947)
It is amazing how a professional film company can let some movies fall into this category. It is sad that The Three Stooges never made it in tv. They had made a pilot for a show called Jerks Of All Trades in 1949. You would have thought with all the Milton Berle type humor at the time that they would have been a shoo-in.
I don t want to leave you with the impression that the Stooges made only film shorts, they also made 19 full length films, the first one was Soup To Nuts in 1930 and the last was The Outlaws Is Coming in 1965. The Three Stooges were loved by many people, including me. They are gone now, but the memory of them lives on in their films. Maybe some day, even a hundred years from now or longer, children will still be laughing as Moe keeps hitting his thumb with a hammer and turning and slapping Larry every time.

Do you remember the date you did in your guitar for a job with a bank or your piano gave & 39; distance learning, a doctor? Have you ever bothered to your musical roots rediscovered once you retire? Are you still hopeful of & 39;, & 39; that one day you will receive your sax member of dust and local jam session? If this sounds too well known, you & 39; n are not alone. Indeed, it often than you might think, for people in the later stages of life, the itch to return to their musical roots.

Like closet most musicians that you probably have reached a turning point in your life when you had to choose between the security of & 39; a workplace & 39; and the uncertainty as to whether a life in music. And, as & 39; overwhelming majority of you have chosen, more stable path. Have you ever wondered if, as it would have been like if you had enough courage to continue the path for others - even though it could have quite freaked out your parents?

As a professional concert pianist People say, I have all the time to make something of what I do. Many of these people want-they just & 39; clock back and turning to another shot, even if it & 39; is perhaps not be the right thing to do.

That is why I am so grateful for the path that I have chosen & 39;, and not just because I & 39; loves, but because I & 39; have never thought about this could I have missed. The truth is that I & 39; likes and what she & 39; music for my soul. I wake up every day with tension, because I really do not know what will happen, or if I am at the end. & 39; C is for me a gift, and not a liability. The only thing certain in my life & 39; of insecurity and that I am always able to count.

But, our society & 39; n is not programmed to think, in this regard. We continued to play & 39; school, it guarantees a job and pay. It is certainly the easy thing to do, but & 39; is good? I believe we are all born for something new and & 39; learn about every day exciting. For most people who work for the same day after day, a job, most likely to hate - as & 39; learning?

Many people are at a critical juncture in recent years, when they feel themselves & quot; & 39; What is this, indeed, around my dreams? & Quot; But then think of themselves: & quot; I got married and had children, it would be quite irresponsible of me to succeed, because my dreams are so few in fact . & Quot; That is true, unless you could not why, as the & 39; one of the few?

In all cases, I often say, human beings & quot; Why not leave your job now that you? & Quot; I think every day live in a situation that you hate, it is just somewhere you do not want to go. It is important to choose a goal in life, that you are really passionate, & 39; because this is what makes your life, and a very exciting challenge. Anyone can get a job.

But, even if you absolutely can not give up your job, why not take seriously the music at the same time? For now, and starting to practise secrecy. Then, finally, you are good enough for others. And if you have enough passion, you can even musicians that you have always admired from afar. You know that you have, often with a mixture of joy and celebrate mourning, because you know that that person would have been?

The good news, it & 39; is still not too late!

Take my friend Bruce, for example. With three years to go to his retirement as a bank executive, it is closer to the guitar blues. Shortly after, it is reunified High School band, and now they are in fact themselves for booking dances, concerts and private events.

And, my friend Mary Ann does the same. She had a degree in classical music, piano, she responded to a family doctor. However, a few years later, she is a jazz quartet with some friends and another doctor, battery, and the sealing strip & 39; at least 5 nights per month in the city.

These are just two examples of people who understand that & 39; they have both a successful career and a life in music. Like her, you do not want to have to wait until & 39; that you are to retirement, to return once again to do what you love.

So next time you need to rejuvenate your life with music, just the & 39; wardrobe. Because the truth is the only thing you stop. Take my advice and start your life as you want, and not, like everyone else you have planned. Live the rest of your life to do what you like, because the only risk in life, which is not a & 39;.

Increase Your Intelligence With Music

You Are What You To
Can music really help you feel better? Yes, according to the research, was far.
Listening done so, and participation in the music creates new neural pathways in your brain that stimulate creativity. Studies have shown that music actually trains the brain for higher forms of thinking. There was a study at the University of California, for example, over 10 years ago.
Researchers followed the progress of the three-year-olds, divided into two groups. The first group had no special training, or exposure to music. The second group, studied piano and sang chorus.
After daily in eight months the musical three-year-olds were much better solve puzzles. During the test, which they also scored 80% higher than in the spatial intelligence is not the musical group. With such a dramatic difference, there is inevitably more research, as called for in the future.
There is anectdotal evidence that listening to music, especially from Mozart& 39;s time, you can study and learn better. Hopefully it will be done to the research to confirm or refute this soon, but there is really no good reason not to do your own experiments in this field. Stephen King writes in a loud rock music playing, perhaps all the services are here to your own taste or brain organization.
Brainwave Entrainment
Want to hear music, and get smarter? There are a number of products that are on a completely different principle than the research said. They rely on " under " your brain flows to you in a meditative state.
Brain wave frequencies depending on the mental state. Daydreams and light meditation usually take place in the Alpha " " series of frequencies, for example. So, if you listen to music, the beats at a frequency of 10 Hz will feel very relaxed because your brain starts to follow this frequency reproduce the rhythm in the music. They will automatically generate more brain waves at a 10 Hz frequency and enter a relaxed alpha mental state.
What embed these new products, it is music with beats and legumes that entrain your brain waves at a certain frequency. You just in the correct CD or MP3 for your work (you do not wan t & 39; an alpha state for the analytical work), and you get a better functioning of the brain. Science? Partly.
It is well established that our brain wave frequencies with our mental states, and vice versa. It was also clearly shown that meditators will, in an alpha state, and this has a positive effect (reducing stress, high blood pressure, etc.). Are the tapes this easier?
Yes, in my experience. I have noticed that the two products, myself in a peaceful state, in contrast to all other music or meditative practice. (Visit my site for more information.) Studies show, the impact (some already have), and wild refute the allegations of some of these products. Given that I experienced, but I would not wait for the research, more than I would have waited evidence for the existence of vitamin C, before I continue to eat limes to cure scurvy hundred years ago.
Wait more evidence of the benefits of brainwave entrainment, if you must, but why should we not try to classical music, the next time you have to study, just to see if it helps? Experiment with music - I have not heard of any damage caused by Mozart.
Steve Gillman has been studying brainpower enhancement, creative problem-solving, and related topics for years. You can visit his website, and subscribe to his newsletter Brainpower, at: http://www.IncreaseBrainPower.com/newsletter.html
